Game against William Allen High School. PHS-44; WAHS-43

Coach Carter with Coach Doug Snyder, Coach Karim and Coach Davison

The student has become the teacher.

In his return to the William Allen Holiday Tournament after a loss in 2007 PHS coach Jason Carter and his experienced group of juniors and seniors avenged last season's defeat with a pulsating 44-43 victory over the host school. In the process Carter defeated William Allen coach Doug Snyder his old high school coach he played for at PHS.

Coming off a disappointing loss to Springfield-Delco High School on Monday, PHS was seeking redemption. From the opening tip off, PHS was far more energetic and intense than its opponent. After the first quarter, to the surprise of the packed William Allen gymnasium, PHS was up 17-9.

With a strong second quarter the Little Tigers added to their lead taking a nine point lead into the locker room at 30-21.

PHS led 37-30 after three, but in the fourth quarter things tightened considerably as William Allen quickly tied things up. However, PHS struck back as Jordan Metro, playing for the injured Thatcher Foster, hit a layup to put PHS up by 2. AJ Dowers was then put in as a defensive replacement which turned out to be a smart move. On William Allen's next possession, Dowers came up with a huge block and threw it out to DeQuan Holman who was fouled intentionally. He went to the line for a 1-1 and hit both. Allen then came down the floor and hit a three pointer in the corner to cut the lead to 1. With 5 seconds left Josh Gordon inbounded the ball to Holman who was fouled. But this time he missed his first shot and the half court prayer by William Allen was wide. Final score, PHS-44; WAHS-43.

DeQuan Holman, the MVP of the game, had 18 points with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Skye Ettin had 11 points 5 rebounds and 3 steals and AJ Dowers had 6 points with 6 rebounds and 2 huge blocks.

As PHS returns triumphantly to Princeton, closer as a team and with a big win under its belt, the team looks forward to playing for the first time this season in its own gym winners of two of its first three games.

Game against Springfield Delco High School. SHS-63; PHS-58

The Tigers only lost to Springfield-Delco by 5 points in their first game of the William Allen tournament in Allentown, Pa, but the final score is not indicative of how the game transpired.

Springfield-Delco never relinquished the lead that it held for the entire game. Although Princeton High School attempted and sometimes succeeded in going on runs, they turned out to be superfluous. PHS could never quite take over the lead.

The repeated fouls and lackluster defense contributed to PHS's loss. In each of the two halves, PHS reached the double bonus. Not a smart move considering Springfield shot 20/26 from the free throw line. Springfield was also impressive from the three point line nailing 5. Springfield looked very disciplined and rarely missed a shot.

The game was always within reach for PHS, fluctuating from a 2 point deficit to an 11 point deficit, but PHS could not catch up to Springfield.

Skye Ettin was named the MVP for PHS for the first game of the round robin. He scored 16 points and added 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Brian Dunlap scored 13 points with 6 assists and DeQuan Holman scored 9 points and added 7 assists. The bench for PHS also brought some needed intensity like Jordan Metro's 4 points and Devon Holman's 6 points off of two threes.

The purpose of the road trip to Allentown is to test PHS's mettle against non-CVC teams. Springfield gave them a good test and turned out to be an appropriate measuring stick for what PHS needs to work on to be successful this season.

PHS will take on William Allen High School tomorrow, December 30 at 7:30 p.m. William Allen has already defeated Springfield-Delco.

Game against Hightstown High School. PHS-67; HHS-50

Because Princeton High School's home opener against Lawrence was cancelled last Friday, they were forced to go on the road for their first game of the year. The unsuspecting victim was Hightstown High School.

Right from the tip off, ironically not won by PHS, they controlled the tempo of the game. The Little Tigers rarely set up their motion offense because of the mass of points scored off fast breaks, and they gave Hightstown a taste of their own medicine by using a full court press.

PHS had a tremendous advantage on its side. The die hard followers of the team made the trek to the Hightstown gym, making the "hostile" away game virtually a home game. This "6th man" yelled and screamed the PHS Little Tigers to victory.

PHS had not won a game in Hightstown's own backyard for a very long time, and the coaching staff and the players were pleased with the collective effort. Everybody that stepped onto the court on December 22, contributed positively to the 17 point victory.

The double-digit margin was very indicative of how the game transpired. PHS came out firing and running all over the Hightstown players.

DeQuan Holman led the scoring with 16 points, and added 7 assists and 6 steals. Thatcher Foster had 13 points, Brian Dunlap had 8 points and 5 assists and AJ Dowers, the man of the match, boasting a recent acceptance into Washington and Lee University, had 15 points and 7 rebounds. AJ also had a dunk that brought down the house and deflated the dwindling morale of Hightstown. His scream that followed the slam reverberated throughout the gymnasium and shook the floor boards.

PHS' next games will take place during the Holiday Break at the William Allen tournament in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Hope to see you all at the games next year!

Clinic

On Saturday, December 20, the Princeton High School varsity players, coaches and managers gave back to the community that has supported them throughout their entire high school career.

They held a clinic for the Dillon basketball players who wanted to improve their basketball skills. They worked on dribbling, passing, shooting, endurance, and to the chagrin of Coach Carter, listening skills.

It seemed as though the kids really enjoyed the clinic and were having fun. Everybody learned a little something about basketball that they can hopefully use in games and to further their basketball careers.

It also gave a chance for the varsity players to practice their coaching skills and they got a lot of practice because there was a great turnout.

Since PHS's game on Friday against Lawrence was canceled due to snow, PHS will take on Hightstown on the road on Monday, December 22.

If you want to support the team t-shirts are available to purchase. There are long sleeve Princeton High School basketball shirts in stock for $17 each in all sizes and as of January 5, short sleeve t-shirts for $12 in all sizes.

Scrimmage against Bordentown High School. PHS-56; BHS-41

On Tuesday, December 16, Princeton High School matched their pre-season mark from last year by improving their record to 4-0. They beat Bordentown Regional High School by 15 points.

PHS came out with more energy than their opponents despite the tediously long bus ride through the freezing rain. From the tip off, PHS looked more lively than Bordentown, and it showed on the court.

PHS led after the 1st half 29-15, with every member of the team contributing positively. PHS looked more focused, and more fit than Bordentown. A majority of PHS's points were scored off fast breaks, when they were able to exploit the porous transition defense that Bordentown through out.

In the second half, it looked as though Bordentown had something to prove. The second half was neck and neck for the full sixteen minutes. However, PHS prevailed 27-26. The final score read 56-41.

Skye Ettin led the scoring with 23 points, followed by 19 points and 11 rebounds from DeQuan Holman, and 13 points and 11 assists from Brian Dunlap.

Pre-season for the PHS Little Tigers is now over. So as they try to continue their winning ways, they will take on Lawrence High School this Friday in their home opener and first game of the 2008-09 season.

Scrimmage against Florence High School; PHS-46 FHS-29

Princeton High School improved their pre-season record to 3-0 on Friday evening with their win over Florence High School.

PHS came out a little slow in the first half and had an abundance of turnovers.  Florence's stingy defense frazzled the Princeton players and there were many missed layups by PHS resulting in a first half score of 18-16 in Florence's favor.

In the second half, nerves calmed, as PHS started to execute their gameplan; fast breaks, and moving the ball on offense.  They hammered Florence in the second half, 30-11.

Skye Ettin led the scoring with 18 points.  Brian Dunlap had 8 points and Devon Holman continued his solid play with 6 points.

On Tuesday, December 16, PHS will take on Bordentown on the road in a pre-season scrimmage.

The home opener for PHS is on Friday, December 19.

Scrimmage against RIverside High School: PHS-75; Riverside-36

Princeton High School improved to 2-0 in the pre-season with their win over Riverside High School on Wednesday, December 10.

After a long bus ride in the pouring rain, the team arrived at the gymnasium and only had 10 minutes to warm up. This proved not to be important after Princeton came out and scored 18 points in the first quarter.

Confusing Riverside with its press, and scoring many of its points off fast breaks, it looked as though the hard and long practices were paying off.

Skye Ettin led the scoring with 23 points, DeQuan Holman followed with 19 points, and Brian Dunlap had 13 points.

PHS's next game will be against Florence High School on Friday, December 12 at Florence.

Scrimmage against Burlington Township. PHS-79 Burlington-32

The scrimmage against Burlington Township was the result of all the pent up energy and excitement that Princeton had, as they looked to play their first organized game since last season.

AJ Dowers was the star of the game with 20 points and 17 rebounds, Skye Ettin added 12, Brian Dunlap had 16, and DeQuan Holeman, who only played the second half, scored 12 points.

When all is said and done, the game was a good effort by Princeton. The coaching staff was very pleased. The players applied all they had learned in 6 practices, and came out with great intensity and presence.

Although, Princeton prevailed over Burlington Township on Friday, there is a lot of things to work on, and practice before the regular season commences.

Princeton High School will take on Riverside High School on the road next Wednesday.
